Book an international flight too early and you overpay for the airline's peace of mind. Too late and you're funding their next jet. The good news: the sweet spot is wider than the internet makes it sound — here's where it actually sits, and how to land inside it.

The short answer

For international flights from the USA, the cheapest window is roughly two to eight months before departure. Where you land inside that window depends on demand:

Peak (summer, Christmas/New Year): book 5–8 months out.
Shoulder and off-peak: 2–4 months is usually enough.
Inside ~3 weeks: the danger zone — prices climb fast.

Why “as early as possible” is wrong

Airlines load seats for sale around 11 months out, but they open them at high introductory prices, betting eager planners will pay. Those fares usually drift down into the sweet spot before climbing again near departure. Booking the day the calendar opens often means overpaying for the privilege of being early.

The exception is genuinely scarce travel — a tiny route, a festival week, peak holiday dates — where seats sell out and waiting backfires. When in doubt about a high-demand date, lean earlier.

The window shifts by season and destination

Summer in Western Europe and the winter holidays everywhere are the two big premium periods — treat those as “book early.” Shoulder seasons (spring and fall) give you more room to wait. And don't forget the un-sexy logistics: if your passport is expiring, the U.S. State Department's passport service can take weeks, so sort that before you book a non-refundable international ticket.
